Saganaki - Pan-fried Cheese

Saganaki is a delicious Greek appetiser featuring pan-fried cheese that's crispy on the outside and melty on the inside. This simple recipe is made with just three ingredients and is ready in under 20 minutes!

Cheese options 🧀

Typically, graviera / kasseri / kefalotyri are used to make saganaki, but since those cheese are really hard to find in the UK, you can substitute them easily with either Monterey Jack cheese or provolone (both of which are mild and hard cheeses)

Ingredients

  • A block of any of the cheese listed above

  • Approx 50g plain flour

  • A bit of water to wet the cheese

  • Approx 100ml vegetable oil for shallow frying

15-20 minutes to cook | Serves 1

Method

  1. Slice the cheese to form a rectangle shape and place it under running water to wet.

  2. Dredge the block of cheese in flour, making sure to cover all sides evenly.

  3. In a frying pan with hot oil, carefully place the block of cheese and cook on both side for 1-2 minutes on a high heat until golden brown and crispy.
