Greek-Style Baklava
Baklava is enjoyed across many cultures. This Greek-style baklava is made with layers of flaky filo, crushed walnuts, and drenched in heavenly honey syrup. Perfect for sharing or as an indulgent treat!
Ingredients
250g walnuts, crushed
1 tsp cinnamon
Approx 12-15 sheets of filo pastry (cut according to the size of the baking dish)
100g butter, melted (plus more if necessary).
For the syrup:
100ml water
150g granulated sugar
Honey (approx 100g)
60 minutes to cook | Makes 35 squares of baklava
Method
Start by prepping the walnuts (you can do this either by pulsing or finely chopping them). Add these to a bowl along with cinnamon and mix well.
To make the syrup, combine the sugar, water and honey in a saucepan and place over a low heat. Stir regularly until the syrup foams , then take off the heat and leave to cool.
Melt the butter and grease the bottom of a large rectangular baking dish. Place about 7 sheets of filo pastry and brush down with more melted butter. Then spread out the crushed walnuts.
Top with more layers of filo pastry brushed with melted butter (I recommend using about 5 sheets for this top layer).
Cut the baklava into about 4-5 rows vertically and then horizontally, to creat square shapes.
Bake for 20-22 minutes at 180 degrees Celsius fan. Once golden, carefully pour the syrup on top and leave to cool for half an hour before serving.
